Two-up is the Australian coin-toss game: two coins go up in the air, and you bet on how they land — both heads, both tails, or one of each. How a round works
How to play Two-up on our practice table
A round takes a few seconds. You pick one of three bets — Heads, Odds, or Tails — and set a stake in ten-cent units of practice credits. Then the toss: two coins fly from the kip, spin, and land. One toss settles everything.
- Heads wins if both coins land heads and returns 3.8x your stake.
- Tails wins if both coins land tails and returns 3.8x your stake.
- Odds wins if the coins split — one head, one tail — and returns 1.9x your stake.
Returns include your stake. A winning 1.00 bet on Heads returns 3.80 in total, which is 2.80 of profit. A losing bet returns nothing. One detail worth knowing: each coin is resolved by cryptographic randomness before the toss animation even begins, so the flight of the coins is a replay of a result that is already locked in, not a physics simulation you can read.
How a traditional Two-up ring works
The classic game is played in a circle of spectators called the ring. A designated player, the spinner, places two pennies tails-up on a flat piece of wood called the kip. The ringkeeper — the person running the game — waits until bets are matched between players around the ring, then calls “come in spinner,” and the spinner tosses the coins well above head height.
Players back heads or tails against each other at even money. The crucial difference from our table is what happens when the coins split: in most traditional rings, one head and one tail — called odds, or “one them” — is no result at all. The spinner simply tosses again, and keeps tossing until the coins agree. Some venues spice this up with a side bet on the spinner throwing five consecutive odds, but the core wager is a plain even-money coin flip that just takes a variable number of tosses to decide. Exact procedures vary from ring to ring.
What our table simplifies, and why the math still lines up
Our practice table is an honest simplification of that ritual. Every single toss settles your bet, odds is a backable outcome in its own right, and the payouts are fixed and published. It is worth being precise about how the single-toss format relates to the re-toss ring.
Backing Heads at 3.8x on a single toss has exactly the same expected return as being paid 1.9x on a toss that is guaranteed to be decided. Throwing out the odds tosses doubles the chance of both-heads from 1 in 4 to 1 in 2, while the payout halves from 3.8x to 1.9x, so the two products match: 0.25 times 3.8 and 0.5 times 1.9 both equal 0.95. The expected return is identical, but they are not the same bet. The single-toss version loses outright when the coins split instead of re-tossing, so it wins half as often and swings harder from round to round.
Note also that a traditional ring bet between spectators pays true even money — 2x on a decided toss — with no built-in margin at all, because it is player against player. Our table’s fixed 5 percent margin is a deliberate, published design choice that mirrors house-banked versions of the game rather than the social ring. Since the credits have no cash value, the margin exists so the practice math behaves like a real house-banked game would.
Two-up odds and payouts
Two fair coins produce four equally likely arrangements: head-head, head-tail, tail-head, and tail-tail. Because each coin is independent and lands heads exactly half the time, every arrangement has a 1 in 4 chance. One head and one tail covers two of the four arrangements, which is why Odds lands 1 time in 2 while Heads and Tails each land 1 time in 4.

Why Heads and Tails pay the same
The coins are fair, so nothing distinguishes heads from tails mathematically. Swap the labels on both coins and the game is unchanged: both-heads and both-tails must have the same probability, so any honest game has to pay them identically. That symmetry is baked into the engine, which uses one payout constant for both bets.
Is there a strategy for Two-up?
No, and the table above shows why. Every bet has an expected return of exactly 0.95 per 1.00 staked: 0.25 times 3.8 for Heads or Tails, and 0.5 times 1.9 for Odds. Odds wins twice as often but pays half as much, so nothing you pick, stagger, or alternate changes your long-run result. Each toss is independent, so streaks carry no information either — five heads results in a row leave the next toss at exactly the same 1 in 4. The only real choice is a volatility preference: Odds gives you frequent small wins, Heads and Tails give you rarer, larger ones. The flip side of a 0.95 expected return is a 5 percent edge on every bet. On the practice table that edge costs you nothing but valueless credits. In any real-money version of a game with these numbers, it would be a guaranteed long-run loss, which is a good reason to treat Two-up as what it historically was: a ritual and a pastime, not an investment.
Why Two-up is tied to Anzac Day
Two-up grew out of pitch-and-toss, the old single-coin gambling game carried to the Australian colonies by British and Irish settlers and convicts. It became the soldiers’ game of the First World War. How we calculated this
Every number in this guide comes from the practice game’s own engine, not from secondary sources. The rule set is: one toss of two coins, each coin independently landing heads or tails with equal probability, with three bets — Heads paying 3.8x, Tails paying 3.8x, and Odds paying 1.9x, all returns inclusive of stake, all wagers in ten-cent units of practice credits.
The probabilities follow from two independent fair coins: four equally likely arrangements, so both-heads and both-tails are each 1 in 4 and a split is 1 in 2. The payout multipliers 3.8 and 1.9 are constants in the engine file, which computes returns as exact integer cents — 38 or 19 times the stake, divided by 10 — to avoid floating-point error. Multiplying probability by payout gives the expected return: 0.25 times 3.8 equals 0.95, and 0.5 times 1.9 equals 0.95, matching the 95 percent theoretical return the engine declares as a constant and the game publishes in its UI. Each coin is drawn from the browser’s cryptographic random number generator using rejection sampling, so both sides are exactly equally likely, and the outcome is fully resolved before the coin animation starts.
Common questions
What does "come in spinner" mean?
It is the ringkeeper’s call that all bets are set and the spinner may toss the coins. Once you hear it, no more bets go down until the toss is resolved. On our practice table the equivalent moment is the toss itself — your pick and stake lock the instant the coins leave the kip.
What are the odds of heads in Two-up?
On our practice table a Heads bet wins when both coins land heads, which happens 1 time in 4 on a single toss, and it pays 3.8x your stake.
