Craps bet rules, persistence, and payouts
  • Pass and Don’t Pass follow come-out and point phases; 12 pushes on Don’t Pass.
  • Come and Don’t Come travel to 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10. Don’t Come also pushes on 12 before traveling.
  • Pass/Come odds pay 2:1 on 4/10, 3:2 on 5/9, and 6:5 on 6/8. Don’t odds pay the inverse true odds.
  • Place bets pay 9:5 on 4/10, 7:5 on 5/9, and 7:6 on 6/8; they stay working after a win and fall on 7.
  • Field is one roll: 2 pays 2:1, 12 pays 3:1, and 3/4/9/10/11 pay 1:1.
  • Hard 4/10 pay 7:1 and hard 6/8 pay 9:1; hardways stay up after a hard win and lose on seven or the easy total.

How to play

Craps practice simulation

Follow the puck from come-out to point with supported line, odds, place, field, and hardway bets.

  1. On a come-out roll, Pass wins on 7 or 11 and Don’t Pass wins on 2 or 3; 12 pushes on Don’t Pass.
  2. When 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10 becomes the point, the puck turns ON until the point repeats or a seven-out occurs.
  3. Come and Don’t Come bets travel to a number. Drop chips on true-odds zones when they appear behind an established line or traveled bet.
  4. Place and hardway bets can persist across rolls. Field is always a one-roll bet. Payout labels and required wager multiples are visible on the table.

About this game

The one bet in the casino with no house edge

Craps carries the widest spread of bet quality of any table game. The Pass Line is among the best bets available anywhere, and the odds bet placed behind it pays true odds with no house edge at all — while other bets on the same felt are among the worst in the building.

Typical session: 3–15 minutes.

The practice-credit balance stays in this browser. It has no cash value and is not connected to accounts, points, rewards, cosmetics, or leaderboards. No download is required. Read the safety and compatibility facts.

Which craps bets are actually worth making

The come-out roll and the point

A round begins with a come-out roll. On the Pass Line, 7 or 11 wins immediately and 2, 3, or 12 loses immediately. Any other number — 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10 — becomes the point.

Once a point is set, the shooter keeps rolling until either the point repeats, which wins the Pass Line, or a 7 appears, which loses it. Don’t Pass is close to the mirror image, winning where Pass loses with one number barred so the bet is not outright favourable.

Once a point exists you may back your Pass Line bet with an odds bet. That is a separate stake behind the original, and it is the reason craps is worth learning.

Take the odds, and ignore almost everything else

The odds bet pays exactly true odds — 2 to 1 on a point of 4 or 10, 3 to 2 on 5 or 9, and 6 to 5 on 6 or 8. Those are the real probabilities of the point repeating before a seven, which means the house has no edge on that money whatsoever. It is the only bet of its kind in a casino.

So the way to lower your overall edge is to bet the minimum on the Pass Line and put as much as you are comfortable with behind it as odds. The Pass Line carries the edge; the odds carry none, so the larger the odds portion, the closer your combined edge sits to zero.

Almost everything else is worse, often dramatically. The centre proposition bets are the worst on the table. Place bets on 6 and 8 are respectable; on 4 and 10 they are not. The simplest good strategy in any casino is: Pass Line, maximum odds, stop.

  • Odds bets need specific stake increments so the payout resolves to whole cents; the table shows each.
  • Come bets work exactly like a fresh Pass Line on the next roll, and can be backed with odds too.

What the odds bet pays

Odds payouts are the true probability of the point repeating before a seven. A point of 6 has five ways to make it against six ways to make a seven, so it pays 6 to 5 — precisely its real chance, with nothing taken out.

Laying odds against a point on the Don’t Pass side inverts these, so you risk more to win less, but again at true odds with no edge taken. Both directions are fair bets in the strict mathematical sense.

Common mistakes

Craps punishes bet selection more than any other game here, because the good and bad bets sit inches apart.

  • Skipping the odds bet. It is the only zero-edge wager in the casino, and leaving it out means playing craps at strictly worse value for no reason.
  • Making large Pass Line bets with small odds. The edge lives entirely on the Pass Line portion — the ratio should run the other way.
  • Taking the centre proposition bets. Hardways and one-roll bets carry by far the worst returns on the layout, whatever the payout numbers suggest.
  • Believing in a hot shooter. Dice have no memory; a shooter who has made four points is exactly as likely to seven out on the next roll as anyone else.

What is different about this version

Odds bets enforce their required stake increments rather than rounding the payout. Because true odds like 6 to 5 and 3 to 2 do not divide evenly into arbitrary stakes, the table requires the multiple that makes the payout exact — which means you are genuinely paid true odds rather than true odds rounded down in the house’s favour.

Pass, Don’t Pass, Come, Don’t Come, their odds, and place bets all follow their real resolution rules, so the sequencing of a round matches a live table. Nothing here is wagered — the balance is a local practice bankroll with no cash value and no connection to any account.

Common questions about Craps

What is the best bet in craps?

The odds bet behind a Pass Line or Come bet. It pays the true probability of the point repeating before a seven, which means the house takes no edge on it at all — the only wager of its kind in a casino.

Why can I only bet odds in certain amounts?

Because true odds like 6 to 5 and 3 to 2 need a stake that divides evenly for the payout to be exact. The table enforces the correct increment so you receive the full true-odds return rather than a rounded one.

Is Don’t Pass better than Pass?

Very slightly, but one number is barred on the come-out to stop it being outright favourable. The difference is small enough that either is a good bet — what matters far more is backing it with odds.

Are the proposition bets in the middle worth trying?

No. The centre bets carry the worst returns on the layout by a wide margin. Their large payout numbers are what make them attractive and what make them expensive.
